On the Origins of the Shrine of ‘Abd al-Samad in Natanz: The Case for a Revised Chronology

Abstract This article proposes a re-examination of the phases construction and decoration at shrine ‘Abd al-Samad in Natanz demonstrates that core fabric elements architectural revetments are datable to Seljuq period ( 431-590/ 1040-1194), or slightly later. The structure was repurposed redecorated, including addition extensive lustre tiles stucco, for by Zayn al-Din al-Mastari early years fourteenth century series separate phases. Particular attention is focused on nature original shrine, revealed beneath mortar which held the, now largely removed, Ilkhanid tilework place.
